Sydney Beer Week, SBW, Feral Brewing Company, Basement Brewhouse
At Basement Brewhouse, we want to change the way you think about craft beer. As one of the only dedicated craft beer destinations in Sydney’s southwest, we offer a wide variety of classic craft styles, as well as some new creations from some of the best breweries in Australia.
One of those breweries is Feral Brewing Co which was founded in 2002 and now distributes to hundreds of pubs and craft beer venues around the country. They are a family-owned, independent brewery that brews beers for beer lovers, the old-fashioned way. Their motto is “Brewed by Instinct”.
Feral is one of our featured breweries taking part in the Brewhouse’s Sydney Beer Week event from 20-29 October. They will be providing two styles of beer and our customers will decide which one they like better. We caught up with Keith Balfour from Feral who says they’re very excited about the event.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BREWERY
Feral Brewing is located in the fringes that straddle the Swan Valley. The Brewpub is an artisanal oasis nestled amongst many wineries, farms and art studios, and is home to our brewery, experimental barrel-aging shed facility, extensive tap-room, restaurant, market garden and gaggle of friendly geese and ducks.
WHAT BEERS ARE YOU PROVIDING THE BREWHOUSE FOR SYDNEY BEER WEEK?
We will have our War Hog which we describe as the Full Metal Jacket of an American IPA, featuring clustered hops and passionfruit aromas, and our Watermelon Warhead which is a light sour German wheat beer, brewed with an addition of half a ton of local Swan Valley watermelons.
HOW DO THESE BEERS FIT INTO YOUR NORMAL RANGE?
The War Hog is a year-round drop which is the bigger brother to Hop Hog. We class these brews as our trustworthy familiars that will get you through thick and thin. They are truly feral to the core. Our Watermelon Warhead is part of our Brewpub series which are specialty, seasonal beers that are available as limited releases throughout the year.
Both of these beers are crowd favourites and made the Hottest 100 for 2016, with War Hog landing at #12 and Watermelon Warhead at #67. Each has a place for a good afternoon/evening/night drink, and both manage to quench the thirst of many a dry-mouthed beast!
WHICH IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE?
Do I have to answer this? It’s like asking which is your favourite child! Alright then… I will have a War Hog to start and then I’ll cleanse my palette with a Watermelon Warhead.
Many have tried to copy us and a few have come close, but my advice is to try these and compare the others to truly find your favourite.
