The Acres Club, Bankstown Sports Club, new venue, Greenacre
It seems like Greenacre Bowling Club has been around as long as the suburb of Greenacre itself. It’s almost iconic to the locals, some of whom have been members for decades.
Every time I stop at those lights on the corner of Roberts Road and Moondo Street, I glance across the bowling greens to the out-dated building that looked like it hadn’t been updated for a while, and wonder what it’s like inside. I have visited the club before but it was years ago, and back then they were struggling to make ends meet.
A few weeks ago, I discovered the venue had been taken over by Bankstown Sports Club. My club! Seeing how we had saved other clubs from closure in the past like Baulkham Hills Sports, Birrong Sports and Bankstown Bowls Club, I was curious to see what we had done for this little Greenacre gem. So, I decided to take the family for a Sunday lunch to check it out.
I was blown away.
The atmosphere inside was bright and fresh, with elements of the club’s history speckled throughout the venue, like the club crest in the bar tiling. The layout of the club is still the same, but the old and somewhat uninviting décor of the past was gone and has been replaced with a modern and stylish dining area, a revamped bar and a new bistro area, boasting a menu that’s to die for! They even have free kids meals!
There’s meat raffles every Friday, poker on Wednesdays and Saturdays, social bowls competitions, barefoot bowls and Family Fun Days. Every Sunday they have a jumping castle and on the first Sunday of the month, they have free activities and live entertainment for adults too.
I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised at the difference the upgrade has made to the overall vibe and atmosphere of the place. And I love that my club – Bankstown Sports – has taken a small club under its wing to guarantee its survival for the local community. It still has that small club feel and it’s not like the bigger clubs in the area.
