Service to Sport Medal and Awards 2018

22 Oct 2018 |

On Monday, 22 October 2018, The Grand Ballroom was transformed into a 1950s diner in celebration of Bankstown Sports’ 60th Anniversary for our annual Service to Sport Medal and Awards night. The event honours our volunteers and celebrates the successes of our associated sporting clubs, both on and off the field. Guests were treated to canapes on arrival served by roller skating waitresses and later enjoyed a three-course feast. During the evening, rock ’n’ roll band Out Of The Shadows was present to replicate the unforgettable atmosphere of the ’50s.

Young Volunteer of the Year
Our first award of the night was the Young Volunteer of the Year, which went to Josh Webbey from Birrong Sports Football Club for his dedication to coaching junior members. Josh has been with the club for 17 years and currently holds the role of Football Coaching Co-ordinator. During this period, he has volunteered his time delivering three training sessions to three different age groups each week and often spends his Saturdays travelling and co-ordinating different games whilst also playing himself.

Volunteer of the Year
Mette Kitiona, who has been involved with Bankstown Jets Touch Association for five years, was named Volunteer of the Year on the big night. Mette has been referred to as the “Mum” of the club due to her caring nature and ability to go above and beyond for the club. Mette often transports children to and from weekly training sessions during the local competition, assists in facilitating the Junior State Cup and is the brainchild of the Pasifika event which brings together the NSW Rugby League, local community and sporting groups to celebrate the Pacific Islander culture.

Club of the Year
Bankstown Sports AFL Club was named Club of the Year for their outstanding work with recruiting and retaining players, their ambition to achieve good results in our Governance and Operations Accreditation Level (G.O.A.L) program and the strong emphasis they place on participation.

G.O.A.L. Awards
This year, we also introduced the G.O.A.L. Awards which were established to measure a sporting club’s performance across five key operating areas: Finance Management and Governance; Communication, Information Management and Community Engagement; Equipment and Facilities Management; Player, Volunteer Management and Codes of Behaviour; and Health & Safety and Risk Management.
These awards were presented to individuals who demonstrated best practice in some of the five key G.O.A.L. areas.

Service to Sport Medals
It was then time to acknowledge those volunteers who have gone above and beyond for our clubs for more than 20 years, with our Service to Sport Medals. This year, we had 14 worthy recipients who were awarded a medallion, a replica lapel pin to wear with pride at future events, a Bankstown Sports gift card and other gifts to thank them for their many years of faithful service to their sporting club and community. Congratulations to: Allison Wright and Ashleigh Renton from Bankstown Sports Netball Club; Andrew Skaltsounis from Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club; Chris Springall from Baulkham Hills Cricket Club; Michelle Bullock and Jeanette Edwards from Baulkham Hills Sports Netball Division; Kevin Robinson from Baulkham Hills Football Club; Kylie Wilkinson from Bankstown Jets Touch Association; Martin McKendrick and John McCann from Birrong Sports Football Club; Pat McCable from Norwest Strikers; andCarol Pater and Scott Fearnside from Berala-Carramar Hardcourt Tennis Association.
